Playa de Salinas
One of the most famous beaches in Asturias and a great favourite with surfers. These 2.5 km of the finest sand and crystal-clear waters are located in the town of Castrillón, just a 35-minute drive from Las Caldas and very close to Avilés.
Playa de Luanco
Always lively and full of history, the locals tend to call this beach Saint Mary’s beach. The beach is in fact instantly recognisable because of the presence of the Church of Santa María de Luanco. A splendid seafront promenade leads all the way to the Playa de la Ribera.
Playa de Xivares
A beach that is actually two beaches: Xivares and Peña María. Located in Carreño, a 34-minute drive from Las Caldas, it is known for its white sand and its perfect surfing waves. It’s one of local Asturians’ favourite beaches.
Playa de San Lorenzo
One of the symbols of Gijón, considered the longest beach in Asturias. Framed by the city's seafront promenade, it retains its natural charm, with almost 3 km of fine sand and crystal-clear water. There are also special outdoor areas for sports fans.
Playa de La Ñora
This small natural cove is also on the Gijón coast, some 40 minutes by car from Las Caldas. Here the waves come crashing onto the fine sand, creating a unique landscape among the towering cliffs. A nearby viewing point offers views of the mouth of the river Ñora.
Playa de Xagó
A veritable spectacle of nature. This beach at Gozón forms part of the Cabo de Peñas Protected Landscape. With well-preserved dunes along its 2 km length, this beach is an oasis of peace and calm. Its powerful waves make it one of the most popular beaches for surfers in Asturias.
Las Caldas
Set amidst mountains on the banks of the river Nalón, Las Caldas is a natural haven with fewer than 400 inhabitants, just 15 minutes from Oviedo. This thermal town and its Balneario Real, the oldest in Spain, take their name from the spring that rises in this valley in the parish of Priorio.
Oviedo
Oviedo is elegance, art and the pure essence of Asturias. Just 9 km from Las Caldas, the capital city boasts a wealth of unique attractions just waiting to be discovered: enjoy tapas in the Fontán market, visit the Museum of Fine Arts and the Cathedral of San Salvador, the starting point of the Primitive Way to Santiago.
Santo Adriano
This tiny hamlet, home to fewer than 300 inhabitants, is one of the most genuinely Asturian villages in the region’s heartland. Ideal for unwinding, strolling through lush meadows, hiking along the Senda del Oso (the Bear Trail), and visiting the Convent Tower and the Conde de la Vega Cave.
Trubia
Just beside Las Caldas, nestled between the river that gives it its name and the river Nalón, Trubia is an old industrial village that serves as the starting point for some of the best routes through the Ubiñas-La Mesa Nature Park, such as the Guanga Waterfalls route, for example, or the Xanas Gorge route.
Grado
Better known by its Asturian name, Grau is one of the largest and liveliest towns in the vicinity of Las Caldas. Bathed by the river Cubia, it is renowned for its rural atmosphere and its famous Sunday market, which provides an ideal opportunity to buy local cheeses, bread and homemade cider.
Gijón
Gijón is only a 30-minute drive from Las Caldas de Oviedo. It is a dynamic city, with a seaside atmosphere. Your trip should definitely include sampling the local cuisine, visiting the Cimavilla neighbourhood with its colourful houses and views of the Cantabrian Sea, and strolling along the San Lorenzo beach.
Catedral de San Salvador
The great cathedral of Asturias is the emblem of the city of Oviedo, and a must-see when you are visiting the Principality. Its Gothic style stands in stark and striking contrast to its pre-Romanesque origins. Its interior holds the Holy Chamber, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Senda del Oso
Along with the Green Trail (la Senda Verde), the Bear Trail is one of the most emblematic nature walks in Asturias. Both of them run very close to Las Caldas. To walk along the Bear Trail is to immerse yourself in the beauty of Asturias’ rivers and forests. You’ll even see traces of old mines, as the trail was built on an old railway line.
Monte Naranco
Two great historical gems of the pre-Romanesque period are located on this hill on the outskirts of Oviedo, just 10 km from the Las Caldas valley: San Miguel de Lillo and Santa María del Naranco, both World Heritage Sites. The hill offers unbeatable views of Oviedo.
Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias
A must-visit for art lovers! Its collection includes works by some of the greatest artists of all times, ranging from Goya to El Greco. The Museum of Fine Arts is located in a unique setting, amidst a complex made up of four historic buildings, including the 18th-century Velarde Palace and the 17th-century Oviedo House.
Ruta de las Xanas
According to Asturian mythology, the Xanas are water fairies who live in fountains, rivers and waterfalls. Today it’s really easy to follow in their footsteps: the Xanas Trail immerses us in a land of legend, leading us along riverbanks and through forests and gorges. Just 11 km from Las Caldas de Oviedo.
Jardín botánico de Gijón
A park full of life and beauty, just a half-hour drive from Las Caldas. Gijón’s Botanic Garden contains more than 30,000 plants and trees from all over the world. Its design will surely surprise you, with themed collections and sensory routes to guide through the different species.
